Camping Trip

First week of spring and we ventured out to the woods. We hiked on the Knobstone Trail and set up camp along the way. We had a nice time just getting out in the woods hiking, bad thing is my back is letting me feel it now. I woke up the next morning and couldn't hardley move. So exercise and getting back into shape is on my list of priorities. There is no way I could survive in the woods if I couldn't even walk. So back at it asap. We must be in shape and ready to move when the shtf. It's been a long winter and I should of been hiking the whole winter instead of hibernating!

Real Off the Grid Living

After not being able to afford the gas bill we got our natural gas shut off. Now comes the true test. Can we really live off the grid. After a few months we have learned it is not as easy as you would think. The wood stove comes in real handy and we use it to cook and warm up dish water. It is a job but it can be done. Nothing like throwing a meal on the stove and cooking it and I sure miss that gas stove. During the summer we rigged up a hose on the roof for hot water and that worked well. Not so great in the winter though. We have a camper and use propane gas for showers. Sure miss those hot baths. Life is not easy living off the grid!

Ginseng Hunting

We took a field trip out to the woods to do some ginseng hunting. The woods was so dry that we did not find much. Found some yellow root just in time, it was starting to die out too. At least we should have enough yellow root for the winter. Another thing we found that we didn't want to find was chiggers. OUCH! Those are just awful. I was up scratching my legs and trying to get some relief so I could get to sleep. I took a good shower and that helped. The next night started itching again so I tried rubbing alcohol and Calamine lotion then I finally got some relief. I was able to get some sleep. Next time we even go anywhere near the woods I am going to use bug repellent.

September Harvest

It's that time to start gathering nuts for the winter. I have been busy getting hickory nuts and walnuts to add to our food storage for the winter. If you can get out in the woods be sure to pick up some nuts to add to your winter diet.

Medical Supplies

Take a quick look inside your bugout bag and make sure you have some medical supplies if needed. Band aids,neosporin,cough drops,vit.c,garlic,yellow root,tea tree oil, and vinegar just to name a few. You don't want to die over something that can be prevented easily by having some antibiotic cream on hand. Better yet, study out what plants you can use once your supply is exhausted in case you have to survive in the wilderness for a long time. You never know what tomorrow may bring so be prepared today.

Today I had my breakfast in my yard, yes I guess you could say I went out to eat. One great thing about this breakfast is it was free, and healthy! I am learning and teaching how to identify wild edible plants. You should too!

Study and Learn all the wild edible plants

After you have studied out the wild edible plants and have someone who knows what they are doing show you how to find them it is time to prepare your body to get used to them. Practice identifying edible and poisonous plants. Never eat a poisonous plant. When you know for sure what you have and are able to identify edible plants eat some. Get your body used to eating off the land. One way to start is find dandelions. You can easily identify dandelions and they are great for your body. You can also dry out the dandelion root and make a dandelion tea, or coffee. Don't wait until you have to escape to the woods and bring your wild edible plant book to try and identify what you can consume. Start today, go on a hike and start recognizing different plants that are beneficial to you.

March has finally arrived and it is time to be getting all your seeds together, planning your garden plots and starting some seeds inside. I am going to get my tomato plants started this week. Not all of them because I don't want them all ready at the same time. I will gradually start my inside garden and it will be so much fun.

I got my seeds ordered and delivered. You should have a good supply of seeds. A variety of different seeds. If times get tough you will have your garden to eat out of. Usually there is enough for the neighbors too! When you can't go to the store and buy food you may be able to sell some of your garden food also. Buy lots and lots of seeds.

Going Solar

I have been reading articles and watching videos about going solar. This looks like the way to go if you are really wanting to live off the grid. I have not figured it all out yet, and I like the looks of a wind turbine but the wind in southern Indiana would not produce much power. You should study out your area before thinking you can make a lot of energy off a wind turbine. Now the northern part of Indiana has alot more wind so you might be able to get some energy going up there.

Deer Hunting Stock UP

Deer hunting season is in and this is a great time to stock up on some deer jerky. End time survival jerky! This stuff tastes great and would be a treat if you didn't have anything to eat while trying to survive in the wild. You would not have to cook it and draw attention to your get away spot it would already be cooked and ready to eat. A MUST!

Pay day hurray! Got the car payment made and made a payment on the electric bill. I get to go grocery shopping today. I saw my sister yesterday and she seemed a little better. David came by yesterday and brought a load of wood. Be sure to stock up on wood in case you need it in hard times. If you cant get gas or buy it without a chip in your hand then you cant use a chain saw to cut it right. Get your woodpile stocked!

I got up this morning and fixed a pot of coffee. Next thing I know the water is no longer working. NO WATER! So I went out and pumped the well to get water to flush the toilet and enough to warm up some to do dishes. After that the water was brown. No way we could use that water for anything. The local store had a gallon of water that I made coffee and milk with. I need to store some water and so do you!

Walking through the woods

We ate garlic yesterday and I put some in the lunch I fixed today, then we took a hike through the woods. This time no ticks, it really does work. Get you some garlic and store some in case you have to take a hiking trail through the wood in a hurry.

I don't think some people actually realize what some people in America are going through just trying to survive. My husband told me the other day that there was a guy on you tube that said there are 300 families living in the national forest that had been displaced. This is just one area in one state. Think about the bigger cities. They are starting to make tent cities. You are blessed if you have a roof over your head. Times are tough, and a lot of people don't have jobs. There are lots of people claiming that food shortages are coming. Store up while you can. Buy rice and beans. Dried milk and water. Get prepared while you have finances to do so. You might even want to buy a tent just in case!

We put out the tomato and pepper plants and covered the tomato plants with glass tents to keep the rabbits out. We have always had a problem with rabbits when it comes to gardening and this year we put glass tents around the plants and it has worked! The lemon balm and catnip are coming up nicely too. I believe the sorrows and troubles are here. With the swine flu spreading like wildfire there are some things you should stop and consider. Am I prepared for what may become of this. What a great day that will be for those who believe.

Sled for survival purpose

After a sled riding trip yesterday I was pulling my little girl around on the sled and it was so much easier to pull then to carry. So if you have access to a small plastic light sled or can get one it could really come in handy if you are put in a situation where you are on foot and have to carry a small load in the snow. You can load up your sled and put your survival gear on the sled and pull alot easier then carrying it all. Or if you have little ones they can get tired easy and this would really come in handy.

I decided it was time to start stocking up on water which is one thing I never really worried about too much because we have a well in case of emergencies. The other day one of the kids went out and pumped it only to get nothing but dirty water out. So I guess with all the rain and flooding it has poured over into the well. So I will be working on water storage now. The well will be fine to water a garden with if we need to but as far as drinking right now it will not work. I bought a big case of water the other day and when I brought it in I noticed that the kids really liked bottled water. When making your list of items you need to store don't forget to put items that you wouldn't use everyday but might need desperately bad in a certain situation. For example, after fighting a terrible uti(urinary tract infection) I remembered I need emergency supplies for medical conditions that frequently occur. Store cranberry juice,(pure),Urinary Pain relief tabs,cranberry tabs,Tylenol,and baking soda. Don't forget to stock up on water! If you have bladder infections you must store up on this stuff, what if you get a bad infection and cant get the items you need, you wont take the mark, you will just suffer in pain, and it hurts! Be prepared. Buy what you need now. Even if you don't have trouble with this, have some on hand anyway just incase.

One way to begin preparing while grocery shopping is to buy in bulk. Be sure to compare prices with the regular sizes packages also. It may be cheaper to buy individual sized packages instead of the larger ones. For example, last night while I was grocery shopping I looked at the 25 lb bag of sugar for alittle over 11.00 vs the 5 lb bags on sale for 2.00 each. The best deal was to buy 5-5lb bags for $10.00. Stock up while you can and be wise as a serpent. Remember: Matthew 10:16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

One main ingredient when it comes to preparation is to study. Start reading any articles you can about living off the land. Research all wild plants and find out which ones are edible and which ones to avoid. Be sure to study pictures and try to identify plants in your own yard. Make it a homeschool project. One way to prepare is to buy up necessary items you will need incase of emergency. Extra food,supplies,ect.
